Join us for the launch of a new program series exploring one of the most urgent priorities identified by our members: strengthening democracy and civic life in the Commonwealth. A healthy democracy is the foundation for everything philanthropy strives to achieve—meeting community needs, advancing equity, remedying injustice, and expanding opportunity. When democracy falters, so does our ability to create lasting change.
We understand democracy as encompassing:
An informed and engaged public
The rule of law, voting rights, and free expression
The nonprofit and civic infrastructure that enables participation for all
The full range of efforts that bridge divides and foster belonging
Today, each of these pillars is under strain. Philanthropy’s renewed commitment to protecting and strengthening democratic life will shape how we show up for one another, how we build trust across differences, and how we sustain thriving communities.
In this first session, we will look back at key moments in U.S. democracy—with a special focus on Massachusetts—identify major milestones, and reflect on the current state of democratic life in the Commonwealth. We will also center a critical question: What does this moment demand of philanthropy? Future programs in the series will take us deeper into the challenges and opportunities ahead.
This kickoff conversation will feature
Ira Jackson, Fellow, Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business & Government, Harvard Kennedy School and
Mary Skelton Roberts, Philanthropy Massachusetts CEO.
