Donor Advised Fund Research Collaborative

Sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the new 2023 National Study on Donor Advised Funds will be the most comprehensive research project on DAFs to date. The study will combine data from DAF sponsoring organizations from across the U.S. (including community foundations, national sponsors, and others) to provide the most accurate and generalizable reports on DAFs. In Partnership with Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Giving Tuesday.

The National Study on Donor Advised Funds will focus on:

• The range of ways that individuals and households use DAFs.

• Donor responses to changes in giving environment (e.g., COVID-19, recession).

• Differences in DAF use among donor groups (e.g., high-net-worth donors, millennials).

By collaborating with Philanthropy Serving Organizations and other DAF sponsor networks, the study will collect data on at least 100,000 DAF accounts held by more than 80 DAF sponsoring organizations across the United States.
