Optimizing Group Meetings: Facilitation skills for greater meeting focus, engagement and results

At the October 2019 kick-off meeting for the Mid to Senior Level Program Staff Learning Network (Learning Network), participants identified "meeting facilitation" as a priority learning area for 2020. We are pleased to offer this 6 hour session, in which you will learn how to facilitate your meetings in a way that leads to:

  • Greater meeting focus so that your meetings are productive
  • Increased participation and engagement so that participants derive greater personal value from your meetings
  • Confidence that you can manage challenging situations, agendas, or personalities so that your meetings are perceived as “time well spent”

Our facilitators will be Joanne Derr of Joanne Derr Consulting and Bruce Fern, President of Change-Ready Solutions. Joanne and Bruce have spent many years teaching others how to be more effective working with groups in both the non-profit and corporate sectors.

Arrive at 9:30 for breakfast and informal conversation. 10am program start time

About the Trainers

Joanne Derr is the Principal of Joanne Derr Consulting which provides executive coaching for senior leaders who need to increase their strategic ability and executive presence in order to be more successful. Joanne also works with teams with the result that members are on the same page, trust each other, resolve conflict, make smart decisions, and hold each other accountable for behaviors and outcomes

An expert in leadership transitions, Joanne has 25 years of executive experience advising leaders of public sector organizations, large public technology companies, and healthcare institutions.

Prior to running her own business, Joanne was the Vice President of Human Resources at Care.com, at Neighborhood Health Plan, and at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, and managed global leadership development at Nortel Networks/Bay Networks.

Bruce Fern is the president and founder of Change-Ready Solutions, which provides organizations with training and management consulting to enhance diversity and inclusion, optimize meetings, develop leaders, optimize sales, and manage change.

Bruce has been on two non-profit boards of directors and is currently on the board of the New York Integral Yoga Institute, a teaching and community service non-profit.

Bruce is also an accomplished organization transformation leader. Prior to Change Ready Solutions, Bruce was the Corporate VP of Leadership and Management Development at New York Life, IBM Senior Managing Consultant and Center of Excellence Leader at the Global Talent & Change Center of Excellence, and a senior executive at Performance Connections International, and at Blessing White/MOHR.


About the Learning Network

The Learning Network convenes mid to senior level program staff who share elements of a common program staff job description but work across issue areas and types of funding institutions. The purpose of the Learning Network is to create an ongoing, safe space for mid to senior level program staff to learn together, furthering their professional development alongside their peers.

To participate in the Learning Network you must meet the following two criteria:

  1. Have worked in a professional setting for at least 10 years.
  2. Currently situated in philanthropy at a foundation or grantmaking program as mid to senior level program staff.

Refunds: When an event or program requires payment, payment is required in advance unless alternative arrangements have been made with an Philanthropy MA staff member. If payment has not been received and/or arrangements have not been made three or more business days before the event date, Philanthropy MA reserves the right to cancel your unpaid reservation. Philanthropy MA does not provide refunds, but a credit good for one year may be issued for future events if notice of nonattendance is received three or more business days prior to the event. If you need to cancel your event registration, please email Philanthropy MA staff at info@philanthropyma.org.
