Rethinking Memorials and Commemoration

Often when we think of “memorials,” we picture bronze statues commemorating an individual or an event. In this conversation, we’ll work to expand this definition of memorials and think through the role philanthropy can play in broadening what commemoration is and centering community voice in the process. Participants will hear from local and national thought leaders as we explore:
  • How can communities self-determine what is in public space given the complexities and lack of existing infrastructure for this type of work?
  • What alternatives are there to traditional, western forms of commemoration?
  • Where does this work intersect with other focus areas, such as civic engagement, education, arts, the environment?
Speakers:

Giles Li  (moderator), Senior Program Officer, Arts & Creativity, Barr Foundation
Jha D Amazi, Principal, MASS Design
Audrey Lopez, PhD, Curator, Researcher and Writer, The Green Way
Annis Sengupta, PhD, Director of Arts and Culture, Metropolitan Area Planning Council
Kim Szeto, Senior Program Director, Public Art, New England Foundation For The Arts

The program is presented in partnership with the MA Arts Funders Network, a meeting space for funders from across the state investing in arts and culture within the Commonwealth, the network explores specific topics of relevance, elevates examples of interesting work, and participates in site visits.
