GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) is New England’s leading legal rights organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status, and gender identity and expression. Our work is guided by the values of Justice and Lived Equality; Inclusion, Equity, and Mutual Respect; Anti-Racism; and Collaboration (for more details, visit GLAD.org).

GLAD provides a supportive and friendly work environment dedicated to groundbreaking achievement for LGBTQ identifying people and people living with HIV. Recent victories include maintaining a general COVID-19 resource list and set of FAQs focused on family protections and modernizing family and parentage laws by introducing or passing legislation in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Other work in progress is focused on passing the Equality Act through a collaborative effort to extend protections of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. GLAD has also deepened and sharped our focus on racial justice work, including through reforming and dismantling systems that we know disproportionately harm LGBTQ BIPOC, such as the criminal justice, juvenile justice, and child welfare systems. We offer staff opportunities to affect change on the interconnections of race and LGBTQ status through their day-to-day work, professional development opportunities, and participation in our Racial and Economic Justice Working Group and GLAD for Economic Opportunity (GEO) committee.

The Development Department supports GLAD’s work by raising money from individual donations, fundraising events, corporate and grant funding. Reporting to the Director of Development and supervising the Individual Giving Coordinator, the Assistant Director of Development will provide leadership for developing and implementing strategies to facilitate and grow GLAD’s individual and planned giving programs. They will be an externally facing fundraiser working collaboratively with the Major Gifts Team, senior leadership, development committee, and board of directors to foster meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors.

Qualifications: at least 5 years of development or related experience with a working knowledge of moves management, and experience stewarding individual relationships. Excellent organizational, planning, written and oral communication skills required, as are proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Suite and a fundraising database (Salesforce preferable). Ability to take initiative and follow-through in a fast-paced environment is a must along with understanding of non-profit, advocacy-based or legal organizations.

Responsibilities for this position:

  • Assist the Director of Development in setting fundraising priorities, meeting financial goals, and carrying out development objectives and priorities for entire organization.
  • Provide oversight and implementation of strategies to engage, renew, and acquire donors and prospects for Community Giving, Equal Justice Council, and Legacy Society through in person meetings, events, video chats, direct mail, phone, and email solicitation.
  • Manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects—conceiving and implementing tailored, creative and impactful stewardship plans; supporting stewardship efforts by staff, board, and volunteers; soliciting gifts directly and in coordination with other staff, board, and volunteers.
  • Create and maintain effective relationships with program staff to identify opportunities for fundraising.
  • Develop and manage expense budgets for all individual giving campaigns and appeals.
  • Ensure that internal project management systems run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Embrace GLAD’s mission and demonstrate commitment to its organizational values.
