The Community Engagement Coach supports the Community Engagement (CE) program of the Women’s Health Unit and Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (BU CTSI). The CE program facilitates and promotes equal research partnerships between community members, patients, researchers, community organizations, and other stakeholders and institutions. The goal is to foster better research that results in better health for our communities.

The CE Coach will contribute to a statewide multi-site community engaged research project to reducing opioid overdose fatalities. The CE Coach will liaise with the project’s community coalitions and support each of them in 1) assessing community priorities and needs related to opioid overdose and 2) facilitating a community action plan reflective of stakeholder priorities and expertise. The CE Coach will facilitate capacity building trainings as well as coalition meetings, and coordinate communication across all project and community stakeholders. While the CE Coach will be based at Boston Medical Center, the Coach will be required to travel to communities across the state and work with remote partners. The CE Coach will also support the overall goals of the Community Engagement program and the Women’s Health Unit.

The ability to travel to communities throughout Massachusetts is required.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Serve as the community engagement point of contact for community coalitions. Train community members and project partners in community engaged research approaches.Provide ongoing support and technical assistance for community coalitions. Coach program partners through a community engaged process that supports local decision making.Establish and maintain open communication between community coalition members, Boston Medical Center and research staff, and all other appropriate stakeholders. Facilitate working meetings. Prepare key findings and tools for dissemination through publications and other forms of outreach. Assist with the preparation of grant proposals, reports, and presentations. Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided. Utilize hospital’s values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate the division’s hospital mission. Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION CHARACTERISTICS

 

EDUCATION:

Masters in Social Work, Public Health, or other human services areas or equivalent experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None

 

EXPERIENCE:

At least 3 years of experience in macro social work, community outreach, public health, or equivalent fields required.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Advanced facilitation and interviewing skills.
  • Experience navigating issues of cultural humility in health equity.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team (sense of humor is valued).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/community coalition information.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole) preferred.
  • Prior experience in field of addiction and substance use disorders encouraged.
  • Experience with evaluation and qualitative data collection a plus.
