Job Title: Development and Communications Associate

Organizational Overview:

At Steps, we promote equity for over 325 students from low-income families in Brookline by expanding their horizons, building upon their skills, and supporting their educational journey in order to maximize their life choices. We help Brookline students living in public housing thrive academically in grade school, matriculate in college, and earn a college degree. Since 2001, Steps has served over 5000 students through out-of-school time programs such as after-school, vacation programs and camp access, career readiness through paid internships and workshops, and college success through advising, mentoring, and financial aid access.

Position Overview:

The Development and Communications Associate provides development, communications, and general administrative support under the direction of the Executive Director (ED).  

Specific Position Responsibilities: 

Development:

  • Takes the lead in drafting the written copy for the organization’s fundraising collateral, including but not limited to the Impact Report copy, the Annual Appeal letters, the Step Up Celebration sponsorship letters, and acknowledgement letters.

  • Supports the ED and Development Committee with fundraising events and campaigns, including the annual Step Up Celebration, Stepping Back to School, house parties, and Steps Educational Equity Society (SEES) forums.

  • Tracks SEES membership throughout the year, keeping an eye on renewals, expirations, and new members as needed.

  • Supports creation of the annual Impact Report, writing the copy, liaising with the design studio, and giving timely feedback during the production process.

  • Receives, records, and processes all incoming donations, appropriately classifying them by campaign or restriction (if any).

  • Supports donor stewardship, primarily sending donor acknowledgements in a timely manner and being available to donors as they request assistance or information.

  • Manages and maintains the fundraising database and communicates with ED and finance staff regarding grant information and upcoming deadlines.

  • Conducts data collection, analysis and reporting as needed in the fundraising database, including but not limited to analyses of major campaigns, key performance indicator (KPI) reports, and miscellaneous solicitor requests.

  • Other general duties as required.

 

Communications:

  • Assists the ED in crafting key communications for Steps to Success supporters and families, primarily via appropriately segmented e-blasts; including fundraising campaign emails, quarterly newsletters, and special organizational updates/ announcements.

  • Updates STS social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn) on a weekly basis with topical content, including but not limited to fundraising campaign posts and updates on Town happenings.

  • Manages STS website as needed, keeping a close watch on the site’s health, security, and needs for maintenance/improvement.

  • Ensures consistently on-brand communications with a uniform style, including fonts, the Steps color palette, and language that serves as a vehicle for brand reinforcement.

 

Administration:

  • Coordinates with the ED and finance staff to pay invoices/reimbursement requests, code transactions, work on the annual audit, and other needs in a timely manner.

  • Assists with all hiring and onboarding processes of new staff and employees.

  • Troubleshoot ongoing basic IT and HR questions from staff.

  • Maintains organizational filing system (online Google Drive and physical files).

  • Provides office management, including upkeep and inventory of office, supplies, and staff/office needs.

  • Checks general communication daily (mail, office phone calls, general STS email inquiries) and ensures correspondence is appropriately responded to in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Updates and upkeeps all online memberships and organizational subscriptions.

  • Provides administrative support to the ED as needed.

  • Other general duties as required.

 

Compensation:

  • Salary Range of $50,000-$55,000; Substantial benefits provided and offered.

Hours are typically 9-5 pm with a typical work week consisting of 3 in-office and 2 remote work days. Flexibility is required based on high school events and programs.
