ABOUT THE Z:
The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center (The “Z”) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to entertain, educate, and inspire our community by presenting a diverse array of high-quality performing artists and providing engaging learning opportunities that contribute to the cultural, social and economic vitality of the South Coast.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Development will lead a small team of development professionals and guide The Z’s fund development efforts, securing charitable contributions that support the organization’s mission and vision while institutionalizing a philanthropic mindset organization-wide. This role requires both strategic vision and a hands-on approach. The Director will work to build support among key constituencies, is accountable for meeting the organization’s ambitious operational fund development goals, while also overseeing The Z’s capital campaign which will be transitioning from a successful leadership phase into a public phase in the coming months. This 31-million-dollar project has a multi-pronged funding package, approximately one-third of which is philanthropy. The Director will work collaboratively with the Vice President of Strategic Engagement and the President & CEO to spearhead this transformative project over the next two years.
Reporting to the Vice President of Strategic Engagement, the Director serves as a key member of The Z’s leadership team and will play a role in the organization’s ambitious equity and justice efforts and strategic planning efforts that will soon be underway. The workday is Monday through Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm but will include occasional evenings and weekends. The Z offers a hybrid work schedule with three days in the office and two from home.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Development:
- Manages a small team including the Associate Director of Development and two part-time coordinators.
- Serves as part of the leadership team, working to ensure organizational health and effectiveness.
- Fosters a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and creates a donor-centered organization that nurtures loyalty through a comprehensive relationship-building program including cultivation and communications.
- Evaluates the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fund development, recommends short- and long-range fund development plans and programs that support the organization’s values, mission, and general objectives.
- Provides general oversight of all the organization’s fund development activities, manages the day-to-day operations of the development function, and monitors adequacy of strategies and tactics.
- Supports attainment of the organization’s fund development goals through the selection, development, motivation, and evaluation of human resources, both professional and volunteer.
- Works with the President & CEO, VP of Strategic Advancement, and volunteers to enable the board and its members to fulfill their fund development roles. Facilitates the optimum interaction between management and volunteers.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect and donor portfolio.
- Oversees the creation of all fundraising materials and correspondence, including proposals, reports, applications, presentations, letters, and gift acknowledgements.
- Provides exemplary service to contributors and funders ascertaining and fulfilling their needs
- Oversees the growth and maintenance of fundraising tracking and reporting systems (i.e., the development database, including electronic and paper files).
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legal and ethical standards and guidelines.
Capital Campaign:
- Work collaboratively with the President & CEO and the VP of Strategic Advancement to develop campaign strategy, set goals, etc.
- Serve as a project manager to facilitate campaign events, communications, and other activity and to ensure the activity is meeting goals, deadlines, and budget projections
- Participate in Capital Campaign Committee meetings including creating agendas, reporting on campaign progress, and recording proceedings
- Oversee the management of donor pipelines, tracking prospects, implementing strategy, including facilitating involvement of committee members
- Oversee the research prospects on the individual, corporation, and foundation levels
- Oversee the creation of campaign communications, such as acknowledgements, follow-up letters, etc.
- Manage and help implement strategies for various campaign activities, including campaign kick-off, donor cultivation and stewardship events, and campaign celebration
- Oversee the management of detailed and accurate donor database entries including pledge agreement and tracking pledge fulfillment
- Plan and implement stewardship of all gifts
- Manage campaign-related tours and visits to The Z
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum of 5 years of development with increasing levels of responsibility and achievement in executing a successful fundraising or related programs; capital campaign experience strongly preferred.
- Comfort with face-to-face solicitation and forming diplomatic and responsive relationships with boards.
- Experience and familiarity with donor communities in relevant fields.
- Solid understanding of nonprofit management, fundraising principles, and best practices.
- Strong evidence of strategic thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, multi-task, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Comfort with working in a small organization, performing a wide variety of functions, from the strategic to the day-to-day.
- Results oriented with strong organizational skills, financial and budgeting skills.
- Grant-writing experience a plus.
- Self-starter with high energy level.
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, leading fundraising software applications and internet resources.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills & attention to detail
- The ability to develop and maintain strong relationships internally and externally
- Experience in the arts and/or a passion for The Z’s mission
