The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) seeks an Executive Director with a demonstrated record of successfully implementing strategic initiatives and building organizational capacity to lead the organization through its next phase of growth. NESEA helps high-performance building and energy efficiency professionals improve their practices by cultivating a cross-disciplinary community where practitioners are encouraged to share, collaborate and learn. NESEA’s vision is to create a vibrant and resilient built environment that supports climate justice and equity.
Founded in 1975, today NESEA is the region's leading 501(c)(3) membership organization promoting sustainable energy practices in the built environment, with a membership of over 3600 individuals and businesses. NESEA’s Executive Director oversees a staff of 8-10 and an annual budget of over $1.5 million.
The ED is responsible for working with the Board to set the vision and strategic direction, developing an annual operational plan, and leading the staff in its implementation. The ED must be passionate about fulfilling NESEA’s mission and must effectively mobilize its Board, staff, organizational partners, and members to carry it out.

This position requires a dynamic individual with exceptional communication skills to inspire, motivate, and mobilize others. A successful ED will be forward-thinking and committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice throughout NESEA’s work. The new ED will travel the region to build on existing relationships, partnerships, and collaborations, and forge new ones, including with communities that are historically underrepresented in NESEA.

The qualifications NESEA seeks in the new Executive Director are:
- demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and supervise a team
- demonstrated record of leadership and success in strategic planning, organizational and strategic program development, partnerships, and problem-solving
- experience in developing and managing a budget of at least $1 million
- experience planning and managing large events
- demonstrated success in relationship-building and fundraising through multiple aspects of development, including business sponsorships, grant writing, or major gifts
- demonstrated knowledge in or a desire to learn about energy efficiency, building systems, renewable energy, and whole systems thinking
- demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias with board, staff, and community
Successful candidates will be:
- Leaders with at least 5 years of management experience in a nonprofit association or small business
- Self-directed with high attention to detail
- Organized and flexible; capable of developing and implementing a work plan, while juggling multiple planned and unforeseen demands daily
- Fluent with a Google suite of applications, Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, and other cloud or remote computing platforms
Working for NESEA
The salary range for this position is between $100,000-$110,000/year with the final compensation to be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and prior experience. NESEA’s benefits package includes generous paid time off (4 weeks to start plus 13 paid holidays), healthcare reimbursement, 401(k) with a 1% employer match, and a flexible work schedule. NESEA offers a hybrid work environment with the opportunity for partial remote work, and this role will require onsite work in NESEA’s office in Greenfield, MA. Candidates should be located within one hour drive from Greenfield and have access to a car for occasional regional travel, staff meetings, and gatherings, and some evening and weekend work will be required. This position reports to the Board of Directors.

First-round screening interviews will be conducted by a member of NESEA’s Transition Task Force (Kate Stephenson, Michael Bruss, Lauren Hildebrand, and Arnold Sapenter) via phone or Zoom.
Second-round interviews will include additional members of the Transition Task Force via Zoom.
Finalist interviews will include opportunities to meet the NESEA staff and additional Board members and may involve an in-person visit to the NESEA offices in Greenfield, MA.
