Thrive Scholars originated in Los Angeles as South Central Scholars (“SCS”) and spent the first 13 years refining its integrated high school-through-career program model. The founders replicated this model in Boston in 2014 as Noonan Scholars, and then merged the two programs into SCS Noonan Scholars in 2017. As part of its national expansion strategy, SCS Noonan Scholars recently rebranded as Thrive Scholars, and has begun launching new regions across the country, starting in Chicago and Cleveland, to enhance the organization’s fundraising capabilities and Scholar recruitment efforts, growing the number of students served by more than 300%.
Thrive Scholars is looking for a Grant Writer to join our growing organization. In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal team members across the organization and showcase your writing talents to steward and generate revenue from leading institutional donors. This full-time position reports to the Managing Director of Foundation Giving and is responsible for writing grant reports, letters of inquiry (LOI), and select funding proposals. We seek a detailed-oriented professional eager to leverage their exceptional writing abilities to ensure that Thrive Scholars’s foundation donors and prospects have a clear understanding of our value proposition, program model, impact and results, and are compelled to support our organization. Our Grant Writer will be successful if they are able to write with ease and agility, have the ability to manage a robust pipeline of grant deliverables, and are able to seek and incorporate conceptual feedback.
This is a full-time exempt position with the option of being fully remote or based out of one of our offices, in Boston or Los Angeles.
In partnership with the Managing Director of Foundation Giving, the Grant Writer will:
Write Grant Reports (60%)
- Write compelling and accurate grant reports in alignment with specific reporting requirements
- Develop and manage project plans and timelines for reports; establish priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and submission.
- Collaborate across the organization to gather reporting information; identify sources of information (such as program data and analysis), coordinate data collection and timelines, and follow internal processes and communications norms.
- Share reports internally for review and revise and edit drafts in alignment with conceptual feedback
- Obtain approvals from senior leadership for on-time submissions
- Prepare and compile addendum materials (e.g. board lists, donor lists, budgets and budget narratives, Scholar profiles, data-driven program results) with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Maintain proficient knowledge of the organization’s history, programs, and forward-looking strategy
Write Letters of Inquiry and Proposals (30%)
- Write compelling LOIs to increase our potential of attracting new foundations in the education sector, including K-12, higher education, diversity, and workforce development investors
- Draft proposal narratives leveraging organizational boilerplate and messaging guidelines, program data and organizational storytelling
- Collaborate with relevant relationship manager and other internal staff to establish alignment on proposal components, including: objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, timetable, staffing, budget, standards of performance, and evaluation
- Maintain quality results by using appropriate tools and templates; following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone; supporting the maintenance of proposal language banks
- Prepare and compile addendum materials for submissions (e.g. budgets, goals and objectives, organizational overview, evaluation plans, and associated attachments).
- Maintain bank of up-to-date common attachments for Development Team use.
- Attend Development team meetings and meetings with grant relationship owners to gain context on specific report or proposal requirements
Support Development Team Operations (10%)
- Cultivate strong relationships with the Development Team to ensure effective work flow
- Update submission records in our Salesforce database and digital files
- Engage in donor-facing events that feature Thrive Scholars
- Minimum of two years of grant writing experience
- Excellent writing and editing skills and command of financial information and budgets
- Experience working in the education field (preferred)
- Ability to write quickly and with agility to stay ahead of grant report and proposal pipeline needs
- Ability to respond well to and incorporate constructive and conceptual feedback
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to proactively seek clarity and ensure alignment
- Extraordinary attention to details and strong initiative to ensure impeccable follow-through and timeliness on all report and grant deliverables
- Demonstrate resourcefulness in seeking and using information needed for grant and report deliverables
- Utilize a collaborative approach and build strong internal relationships with key stakeholders and partners, across levels of the organization
- Excellent project and workflow management skills, including ability to clearly communicate roles and deliverables, and to effectively manage and prioritize multiple deadlines
- Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse identities and contribute to an inclusive work environment
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000, commensurate with experience
