Health Resources in Action, Inc. (HRiA), a nonprofit public health and medical research funding organization based in Boston, MA, has a mission to help people live healthier lives and build healthier communities through prevention, health promotion, policy, and research. HRiA’s services are organized into three clusters: (1) Grantmaking, which includes investments in community health and biomedical research (2) Research and Evaluation, and (3) Capacity Building Assistance. As part of our grantmaking initiatives, HRiA works with private and family foundations, federal and state agencies, hospitals, health systems, and bank trusts to develop and implement customized grant programs. Additionally, the organization provides evaluation services designed to optimize the impact of philanthropic investments. HRiA has worked with its grantmaking clients to award more than $20 million to community-based organizations, partnerships, and municipalities, many of which collectively seek to address health equity and improve population health outcomes. HRiA’s grantmaking services include strategic consultation, grant program development, grants administration and disbursement, and evaluation of grant investment to assess impact.

HRiA seeks to hire a Managing Director of Healthy and Equitable Communities. This is a senior-level position within HRiA’s grantmaking cluster, reporting to the Vice President of Grantmaking, and working in close collaboration with other members of the Grantmaking Leadership Team including other Managing Directors and The Medical Foundation’s Chief Science Officer.
The Managing Director of Healthy and Equitable Communities will oversee a new project for HRiA, which was selected to lead and manage the Culture of Health Prize (the Prize), a national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Prize honors and elevates American communities working at the forefront of advancing health, opportunity, and equity for all. A culture of health, as defined by this program, recognizes that where one lives – including access to affordable homes, quality schools, good jobs, and reliable transportation – affects their length and quality of life. The Prize elevates the compelling stories of places where residents are working together to transform education, jobs, transportation, and housing so better health flourishes for all. As a national recognition prize, the program honors whole communities for work that they have already accomplished and affirms their direction, which enables them to deepen and expand their local collaborations, leverage their Prize win for additional support and resources, and connect with other communities.
The Prize program is at a pivotal juncture after seven years of annual awards to nearly 50 communities across the country. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has selected HRiA to increase the program’s reach to a range of communities; visibility with important audiences including policymakers, media, health equity-focused networks; and impact on changing narratives on what constitutes a healthy equitable community. HRiA will be responsible for:
- Redesigning and managing a national competitive process for the forthcoming applicant pool of the program;
- Spearheading program activities to accelerate narrative change, which is the main emphasis of the Prize program and is recognized as key in shaping our collective understanding about what healthy, equitable communities are. The Prize program seeks to change the dominant narrative, which emphasizes that opportunities for health are defined by individual choices or chance, to the structural conditions and policies that create those opportunities; and
- Developing selection and post-selection activities that recognize and celebrate existing and past Prize winners, foster peer fellowship across the cohort, and elevate accomplishments with key audiences including through, but not limited to, strategic communications tactics.
The Managing Director position will oversee an HRiA team including existing staff and those to be hired nationally, manage client engagements with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and provide oversight for the overall workplan for the leadership and management of the Prize program. The position will be responsible for facilitating regular client check-ins and national advisory committee meetings, maintaining relationships with the partnership engagement network comprised of Spitfire Strategies, Community Catalyst, and YW Boston, and directing geography-focused activities across the four program regions. Additional responsibilities are detailed further below and include financial and budget management, establishing external partnerships with national networks, and embedding and further bolstering this work in our organization’s approach to Community Health and Racial Equity Grantmaking.
This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position starts in the mid-$110,000’s and is commensurate with experience. Duties and Responsibilities
The Managing Director position consists of four main functions:
Leadership and Management
- Work with Vice President of Grantmaking and other Grantmaking Leadership Team members to integrate and align the work of the Prize program into the vision and strategy of the overall Grantmaking cluster and HRiA’s organizational mission.
- Develop and manage an overall workplan for the Prize that integrates all aspects of the initiative and supports team members in executing various aspects of work.
- Coordinate closely with an internal team comprised of Director, Program Officer, and Program Coordinator positions, while collaborating with an internal HRiA team of colleagues from the Health Equity, Research & Evaluation and other clusters.
- Supervise and mentor staff to ensure their professional development and growth and hire where necessary.
- Participate in Senior Leadership and Expanded Leadership Teams, and organizational committees.
- Lead and manage project budgets, planning, project implementation, evaluation, and other related administrative responsibilities.
- Lead, manage, and/or contribute to projects, as needed and/or appropriate.
Program and Project Work
- Cultivate and maintain working relationships with key partnership organizations, including Spitfire Strategies, Community Catalyst, YW Boston, a national Advisory Committee, and current and past Prize winners.
- Serve as a primary contact for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, HRiA’s client.
- Provide financial and budget oversight for the initiative, including working with HRiA’s Administration and Finance department to manage financial resources provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support resources and capacity building for Prize winners.
- Cultivate partnerships with communities and regions across the country that have not historically been aware of or connected with the Prize to promote future cycles and identify opportunities for collaboration.
- Lead the redesign of the Prize program with input from past Prize winners, community members, and national Advisory Committee members.
- Work closely with Spitfire Strategies to develop approach to narrative change that builds upon existing work by Prize program, and further infuses framework throughout future iterations of program.
- Identify new business opportunities to enhance resources available for the Prize.
- Create opportunities to highlight impact of the Prize with existing and new stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to partner with philanthropic community to elevate awareness of the Prize, and to collaborative with other funding entities dedicated to addressing root causes of racial and health inequities.
- Write proposals and lead proposal development processes for relevant opportunities and contribute to other writing teams where appropriate.
- Determine and negotiate scopes of work and execute contracts with external consultants.
- Support senior and junior staff members’ new business development efforts.
- Write or contribute to the development of concept papers, scopes of work, contracts, and other mechanisms for securing new business.
- Identify opportunities to showcase the impact of the Prize with thought leaders across the nation.
- Support the evolution of the Prize program and its impact on equity for communities across the country.
- Identify opportunities to enhance the impact of narrative change in defining what healthy, equitable communities are.
- Identify and serve as an active member of relevant grantmaking networks focused on racial and health equity.
- Submit and/or contribute to publications (e.g., journal manuscripts, practice beliefs, etc.) and/or conference abstracts, presentations, and workshops, where applicable.
- Document and share knowledge and best practices to replicate success.
- Develop and provide content for website, newsletters, and/or other methods of marketing HRiA’s work and impact.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- An advanced degree in public heath, health care, or a relevant, related field with a solid understanding of the fields of philanthropy, community health, social justice, and racial and health equity.
- At least 10 years of relevant work experience in positions of senior leadership in community health, other health-related fields, and/or grantmaking/philanthropy.
- Experience in partnering with community and grassroots organizations across the country as well as national networks.
- Strong experience in program management, strategic planning, facilitation, training/capacity building, and program design/planning.
- Excellent verbal and written skills, including strong presentation skills and the ability to translate complex technical language.
- Experience in developing, managing, and evaluating grant programs and grantmaking practices.
- Knowledge of emerging trends, challenges, and best practices in health equity, philanthropy, and public health.
- Demonstrated experience developing practice briefs, conference abstracts, and other types of presentations.
- Experience working with and managing diverse clients and meeting or exceeding their expectations in quality and performance.
- Solid management experience including developing, leading, and supervising complex projects and high performing teams.
- Successful experience in donor cultivation, funder/client relations, grants administration, marketing, and proposal writing.
- Strong analytical and planning skills.
- Skills to develop and manage budgets and timelines.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
