Who we are:

The Network for Social Justice (NFSJ) is a small community nonprofit organization based in Winchester, Massachusetts with a mission to foster a movement to advance equity and inclusion and address systemic racism in the town of Winchester and beyond it. The organization’s methodology is to challenge systemic oppression through a three-pronged strategy utilizing education to inform community engagement and activation around targeted organizing campaigns for social and racial justice. The Network advances its mission through five action arms working through the following committees: Community Engagement & Education, Response & Advocacy, Schools & Youth, Indigenous People’s Advocacy, and Immigrant Justice.

Basic function:

Program and Volunteer Coordinator responsible for

  • Providing intensive support for student interns, during both the academic year and summer. This will include recruiting applicants, fielding applications, conducting interviews, facilitating weekly meetings, and providing project mentorship check-ins as needed

  • Acting as a liaison between Winchester Public Schools (focusing on grades 6-12) and NFSJ regarding all student volunteers and interns

  • Acting as a liaison between, and conducting outreach with, local faith communities and community nonprofits

  • Researching and developing new projects, trainings and initiatives 

  • Coordinating all aspects of NFSJ programs, including outreach to community, volunteers, disseminating program materials, overseeing adherence to budget and proper accounting, and administering evaluation/monitoring materials 

  • Managing all social media posts and updates on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram

  • Attending regular internal NFSJ meetings with Steering Committee and Board members

Desired skills, knowledge, abilities and duties

Applicants for this position should consider the following as desirable:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently

  • Creativity and program planning skills 

  • Comfortable with social media and tech including Canva, PowerPoint, Word and Google Suite

  • Conference and large-scale event planning experience (for galas, etc.) a plus 

  • Knowledge of facilitation and conflict resolution a strong advantage

Education and experience

  • Undergraduate degree or commensurate experience 

  • Community organizing background, strong demonstrated ability to build relationships with organizations, faith ministries, schools and other community-based institutions 

  • Experience working with youth, specifically grades 8-12

  • Experience and strong passion for social and racial justice and movement building 

Languages

Mandarin and/or Portuguese a plus 

Job type

Part-time (20 hours weekly), with the opportunity to increase to full-time after 6 months 

Flexible hours: part-time hours are somewhat flexible, and there will be some required evening and weekend hours, periodically.

Driver’s license required for this position (Winchester is located on the commuter rail. However, with current train construction, a car is required to access the town and part of the surrounding community)

Work remotely

Work remotely when necessary due to current COVID-19 restrictions; however, we will try to gather in-person when the pandemic’s status allows us to do so, taking into account social distancing, mask mandates, etc.  We will gather outdoors when possible. Individuals will have to be available on-site in the office in a designated workspace employing social distancing regulations when required.

Salary range

$18-22 per hour, commensurate with experience
