VIABILITY is a 501(c)3 corporation, CARF-accredited Community Rehabilitation Program, which provides job training and placement, housing supports, day habilitation, transportation, day supports, education and case management services daily for over 4,000 individuals with disabilities and other social disadvantages throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, and New York. The organization continues to be driven by the belief that every individual, no matter their ability, can be a valuable contributor to our community and our workforce. Driven by a belief in recovery through work, staff and members work together as partners in the operation of a Clubhouse model with six locations across Massachusetts. Each Clubhouse is organized to support people living with mental illness. During the course of their participation in a Clubhouse, members gain access to opportunities to rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, employment and education and to the services and support they may individually need to continue their recovery. A Clubhouse provides a restorative environment for people whose lives have been severely disrupted because of their mental illness, and who need the support of others who are in recovery and who believe that mental illness is treatable. VIABILITY is certified by Clubhouse International.
CIS (Corporate Inclusion Solutions)
Corporate Inclusion Solutions (CIS) is emerging as the preeminent national expert in identifying, training and supporting major companies in their journey to maximize earnings while diversifying their workforce and enhancing their corporate culture so that it is inclusive and sustaining. VIABILITY has developed this program to enhance our other programs and expand our support of corporate partners.
CIS’s approach is to combine the knowledge and collective resources of the corporation with government resources and disability provider agencies (NGOs) to create a comprehensive, cost effective solution.
CIS has over 40 years of knowledge and experience in a blend of three separate industry skill sets that enhance the client’s staffing solutions and maximize their resources so that production demands and targeted goals are achieved.
By understanding each constituency’s needs and speaking their language (yes, we are tri-lingual), we can efficiently assess capabilities, set realistic and attainable goals, monitor progress, identify resources and create customized programs. The benefits of working with CIS include:
Comprehensive Consulting Services: Working with key internal stakeholders, we seek to understand their business goals, lay out a comprehensive implementation plan and project manage, execute or advise at all phases of implementation.
We help businesses work with Federal and State agencies, as well as private foundations, to obtain funding and tax credits to make their initiative successful.
Employee Screening, Placement, Training, Retention and Support: We help match employmentneedswithqualifiedworkerswithdisabilities. Wecreateefficientand effective employee training programs and provide support services. By doing so, businesses will see cost savings in the time and money spent on advertising, interviewing and training as well as through job analysis.
Corporate partners have included Walgreens, Xerox, Travelers, Sephora, Petco and Boston Scientific with positions in distribution, manufacturing, retail, call center operations and more.
VIABILITY’s training and employment programs have been helping qualified workers with disabilities and other disadvantages find and maintain jobs since the 1970s. A leader in vocational training and employment placement, VIABILITY utilizes an array of innovative program models for all abilities to align individual career goals with aspirations. In 2019, the organization worked with 365 employers and assisted over 3,700 people with disabilities in achieving their employment goals in our communities.
VIABILITY’s community living programs provide care management, direct care, and referral services to individuals with disabilities which enable them to live in the community with dignity. VIABILITY supportive services are tailored to the needs of each program participant, based on their individual needs, goals, health, and safety.
VIABILITY’s Day Programs engage participants socially and empower them to increase their skills, develop friendships, and take supportive steps toward greater independence and overall personal growth.
VIABILITY’s Transition Services assist students with disabilities in transitioning into the world of work or higher education with confidence. VIABILITY provides each student with individual attention as they begin considering and working toward career goals.
Operating with a $36 million budget and a staff of nearly 500 employees, VIABILITY continues its 49-year tradition of serving its clients, residents, employer partners, members and communities. VIABILITY’s 36 locations across five states and its fleet of more than 100 vehicles make the organization a critical partner in providing necessary support to its surrounding communities.
VIABILITY was established in 2017 through the merger of two long-standing and highly reputable organizations: Community Enterprises, Inc. and Human Resources Unlimited. Over the past two years, the Board, staff, and stakeholders of VIABILITY have worked through the integration of these two respected organizations to develop the internal infrastructure and culture required to move forward as a unified entity.

As a result, the opportunity for growth of this business line, as a core of VIABILITY’s mission, presents an immediate opportunity for the organization to expand its impact and further grow its resources to serve more individuals in need. The incoming President will have the opportunity to explore the best course of action for this growth and lead its development.
Additionally, the incoming President will have the opportunity to further the organization’s development as a merged entity as it continues in the years ahead. This will include strengthening of the core programs to expand their impact and building upon a culture of collaboration, innovation and a results-oriented work ethic.
As the Board and the leadership of VIABILITY move forward, the next President will have the opportunity to leverage the success of the past three years in the development of a comprehensive strategy for growth and innovation within the organization. This will include both the continued integration of core programming across the organization to ensure maximum impact for the individuals served, as well as furthering key growth opportunities, such as the CIS program.
All of these efforts will culminate in the opportunity for the President to lead a visioning process that respects the past and current successes of VIABILITY and outlines the path to continued, expanded growth and success as a premier organization in the state and region.
The President reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for communicating effectively with the Board to assist them and committees with the establishment and implementation of the agency’s goals, policies and financial structure.
The President serves as an ex-officio member of the Board. The President collaborates with the Board and senior team to develop and implement a strategic plan while ensuring that the budget, staff and priorities are aligned with the agency’s mission.
She/he is responsible for the continuous improvement of quality, profitability and growth by reacting to marketplace changes and opportunities to ensure that VIABILITY’s business changes are implemented and realized to full potential.
The President acts as an ambassador within the public and private sectors to encourage a healthy community and to address the issues of the organization’s constituencies. He/she interacts with clients, volunteers, donors and the community in order to improve services and generate community involvement.
The President is responsible for the fiscal integrity of VIABILITY, including the overall financial condition and annual budget and, as such, is the lead contact for funders at the city, state, and federal levels.
The candidate we seek will be an experienced, proven and effective senior leader who is passionate about improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and special needs. This entrepreneurial individual will bring leadership characterized by a visionary outlook; the ability to garner broad internal and external support; extraordinary success creating strong, effective, collaborative teams; sound business, financial and management acumen; the propensity to increase the visibility and philanthropic resources for the organization; and, the fortitude to carry forward major new projects and initiatives in the interest of spurring further growth. Experience in organizational growth through acquisitions is a plus.
With a strong focus on planning and management, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership developing a compelling and inspired vision and mobilizing the organization in its achievement. Experience nurturing a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence among staff in a complex enterprise of similar size is desired. A proven track record of successful strategies to identify, recruit and retain talent is essential. The ability to lead employees in multiple locations as an effective team of closely coordinated, highly professional, accountable staff members is a must.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated management acumen utilizing sound business principles. The preferred candidate will understand large enterprise management and is knowledgeable of current and possible future policies, practices, and trends affecting the organization. Given the diversity of revenue streams at the organization, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of successful financial management as well as negotiating large, complex agreements. Experience with board governance, development, management and engagement is preferred.
As a strategic leader in fundraising and other revenue activities, the successful candidate will have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with funders, potential donors and other sources of financial support. Experience in or understanding of relationship-driven philanthropy involving individuals, foundations and corporations is preferred; personal experience soliciting resources is a plus.
A good listener, he/she will lead through influence, collaboration and innovation and always adhere to an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs in decision- making. The candidate will have a strong communication style, both verbal and written, and possess the ability to relate to a wide variety of constituents including elected officials, municipal, state and federal bureaucracies, businesses, civic groups, donors, regulators and other advocates. Possessing superior political savvy, he/she will have experience maneuvering through complex political situations effectively, anticipating challenges and planning his/her approach accordingly.
A graduate degree is required. Affiliation with and leadership in local, state or national professional associations and continuing education and professional development is a plus.
