East Boston Community Soup Kitchen Overview

The East Boston Community Soup Kitchen (EBCSK), which began in the Fall of 2016, gathers each Tuesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 28 Paris Street in East Boston to feed between 110 and 150 meals to hungry neighbors. We provide a continental style breakfast from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., lunch from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m., and dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Some of the people who dine with us are single adults who are sleeping in the streets or in shelters. We also have a number of neighborhood residents who come to share a meal; they are in homes, but have trouble making ends meet. We even have some hungry teenagers who stop by after school to get a plate of food. We have a kitchen at the Lutheran Church that we use, but we rely on committed donors who donate prepared food, serving ware, and facilities or equipment on a regular basis. None of this would be possible without the support and dedication of our food donors and volunteers.

 

However, since the pandemic hit, we have completely changed the way we operate. For 3 months, we have seen our guests via appointment on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-3pm to give out food supplies that we get via donations. We've also implemented a grocery store gift card program through generous local donors; between the two, we have been serving between 300 and 400 people per week. However, at the end of July, we are set to move back into serving warm takeout meals on Tuesdays around noon, and stopping the gift card program. With the health and safety precautions, we have had to be agile and adaptable to the changing public health situation.

 

Position Summary

EBCSK is seeking a dynamic Volunteer Coordinator who will be responsible for coordination of volunteer staff for its weekly meals. The ideal candidate will show compassion for a diverse population in need and bring experience coordinating and serving meals while providing leadership and direction of volunteers day-of. This person will report to the Executive Director and be a part of an exciting new community initiative with a bright future.

 

*Time Commitment: This is a service-oriented role sponsored by SCI AmeriCorps. The successful applicant will receive a taxable stipend of up to $14,000 spread over bi-weekly payments. The position is funded from August 1st 2020 to July 29th 2021. The candidate is required to be present during the full day of service (currently every Tuesday) to lead and serve; additional efforts will be spread throughout the week devoted to preparations and communications with relevant internal and external team members and volunteers.

 

Duties

- Food Service (Currently: one day per week on Tuesdays, (subject to change due to Pandemic)

  • Present during entire day of weekly food service
  • Assess and adjust variety & amount of food during meal service
  • Ensure all policies & procedures are followed
  • Interact with guests

- Preparation, Planning & Operations

  • Coordinate food donations, pickups, and deliveries through appropriate contacts
  • Document donor contact information for thank you follow up
  • Ensure food & equipment safety
  • Ensure kitchen cleanliness and sanitation
  • Able to adhere to a budget
  • Data entry
  • Communicate internally and externally to a broad set of team members
  • Represent the Soup Kitchen at events & fundraisers – occasional evenings & weekends required

- Volunteer Coordination

  • Contact potential volunteers (individuals and groups) each week prior to service
  • Maintain an up to date volunteer contact list
  • Review incoming volunteer applications
  • Train & instruct volunteers
  • Design and maintain Kitchen Operations Manual with supervision from the Executive Director
  • Direct volunteers during weekly meal service

 

Qualifications

- Self-directed, able to take initiative

- Food safety certifications (desired)

- Experience leading others

- Experience interacting with vendors, suppliers, and other 3rd parties

- Experience interacting with homeless, low income, diverse, and non-native English-speaking

populations

- Flexible and team oriented

- Bilingual is a plus (Spanish)

- Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, & English

- Problem solving skills, project management & coordination

- Able to manage a schedule and coordinate multiple pickups & deliveries with a volunteer staff

- Maintaining objectivity, and a positive & constructive attitude in a complex environment

- Compassion for a population in need
