The Boston Globe today published a
Letter to the Editor from Philanthropy Massachusetts (PMA) CEO Mary Skelton Roberts, under the headline, “Amid sweeping cuts, philanthropy is meeting the moment.’’
Commenting on a July 12 Globe
article, “Foundations step up as federal government cancels grants,’’ Mary acknowledges that while philanthropic foundations and donors can’t replace all or most of the financial support for nonprofits getting cut in Washington, it “can play—and is playing—an essential role” in sustaining nonprofits. She describes strategies including short-term, stopgap grants, support for greater collaboration and coordination among nonprofits, and support for exploring alliances and mergers to maximize resources.
“Philanthropy was built for this moment. We have the privilege and responsibility to stand in solidarity with people, communities, and nonprofits that are fighting for equity, justice, and maintaining our social compact,” Mary writes.
